About this service

The application is provided free of charge as an experimental prerelease. Continuous availability is not guaranteed. Important originals and projects should also be backed up outside the browser.

Privacy policy

Photos, image regions, masks and image analyses are processed locally in the browser and are not transmitted to Dunkelkammer, Google or other AI services.

2. Hosting and server logs

The application is hosted by ALL-INKL.COM – Neue Medien Münnich, Hauptstraße 68, 02742 Friedersdorf, Germany. When the application is requested, technically necessary connection data is processed, in particular the IP address, time, requested file, transfer status, transferred volume, referrer, browser and operating-system information. This serves the secure and reliable delivery of the application. The legal basis is Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. The hosting provider states that regular web-server logs are deleted after no more than seven days; longer retention may be required for security incidents.

3. Local image processing

Imported originals are processed solely on the user's device. There is no upload endpoint or server-side image processing. Masking, face landmarks, teeth regions, automatic adjustments and retouching also run locally. The MediaPipe runtime has been modified to remove its transport for performance and utilization metrics.

4. Browser storage

Dunkelkammer uses IndexedDB, Local Storage, Cache Storage and the Origin Private File System (OPFS) where necessary for the requested features:

  • projects, safe image metadata, edit recipes, masks and small previews,
  • language, interface settings, export defaults and presets,
  • local file handles where supported and permitted by the browser,
  • complete local copies of originals in the browser's private file system so projects continue to work after reload,
  • the offline application and explicitly installed local AI models.

Original photos are not written to IndexedDB or the app-shell cache. On import, a complete copy is stored automatically in OPFS, which is accessible only to this app origin. Removing a photo from the project also removes this internal copy; external original files remain unchanged. All browser data can be removed through the browser's website-data controls and is not a substitute for an independent backup.

5. Cookies, analytics and external services

The application uses no tracking cookies, advertising, audience analytics or user profiles. Runtime code, fonts and AI models are not loaded from external CDNs. External websites are contacted only after a user actively follows a link.

6. Offline program packages

Optional models are downloaded from the Dunkelkammer server only after an explicit user action and then stored in a separate local model cache. Photos and analysis results are not stored in this cache.

7. EXIF and location data in exports

For JPEG-to-JPEG exports, Dunkelkammer preserves the original EXIF block. It may contain camera, capture and GPS location data. Preservation takes place locally. Users sharing or publishing exported files should inspect their metadata first. PNG and WebP exports currently do not preserve EXIF data.

8. Contact by email

Information sent by email is processed to answer the request. Depending on the request, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(b) or (f) GDPR. Data is deleted after the matter has been resolved unless statutory retention requirements apply. The respective mail providers participate in email transport.

9. Data-subject rights

Subject to the statutory conditions, users have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability and objection. Users may also lodge a complaint with a data-protection supervisory authority. Requests can be sent to apps@moritzcolin.de.

Open-source and model licenses

Dunkelkammer uses locally distributed open-source components and models. Rights in these components remain with their respective copyright holders.
